Health status definitions

  • Axenic animals: animals obtained by means of an aseptic ceasarian operation, free of any detectable organism.
  • Gnotoxenic animals: axenic animals which have been re-colonized by one or more known organisms.
  • SPF (specific pathogen free) animals: animals that are usually obtained by transferring embryos and bred under barriers in order to keep them free from any of the pathogens listed by FELASA.
  • SOPF (specific opportunistic pathogen free) animals: animals that are usually obtained by transferring embryos and bred under barriers, in order to keep them free from any opportunistic or pathogenic microorganism listed by FELASA.
  • Conventional or holoxenic animals: animals that host a flora which cannot be guaranteed free from pathogenic or opportunistic agents.
