The PHENOMIN research and development program is clearly at the forefront of national and international projects for Genetic Engineering and Model Validation, zootechny and for phenotyping. Each Work Package of this program is subdivided in sub-work packages with precisely identified deliverables, milestones and expected results allowing to establish straightforward criteria in order to evaluate the progression and the success of each Work Package.

WP2: Genetic Engineering and Model Validation

WP2 Genetic Engineering and Model Validation is intended to develop and implement tools that will be used by French laboratories and will also have an international impact on the mouse research area. The high level of expertise of ICS, TAAM and CIPHE nodes in the generation and housing of models, in advanced phenotyping, and in mouse preservation and distribution guaranties a high success rate for the different WP2 projects.

Some of the resources to be developed under WP2 will also be of interest for pharmaceutical or biotech companies and will thus provide additional funding for the nodes. Phenotyping protocols will be transferred to PhenoPro to extend the offer of this ICS spin out.

Two main scientific achievements are anticipated:

  • To develop innovative and pertinent genetic tools for the scientific community
  • To provide access to a large panel of novel mouse models and corresponding comprehensive phenotyping analysis.

WP3: Zootechny

WP3 Zootechny supports the R&D WP with new, cost-effective and high-quality animal models although novel methodologies have emerged recently to make better mouse models, generating mouse models remains time-consuming and expensive. In addition, the need to work under standardized conditions require animals with high-standards of health and welfare to ensure the validity of experimental data, which means to use state-of-the-art equipment and appropriate operating procedures to fulfil such needs.

WP4: Phenotyping

WP4 Phenotyping is devoted to the development of new phenotyping analysis (cardiovascular, respiration, metabolism, behaviour and cognition, immunology, infectiology, electrophysiology, neuromuscular, bone morphology and metabolism...) that will end in new services or assays available to the scientific community and new tests validated for highthroughput analysis and the discovery of new genes function (WP5).

WP5: Discover the function of unannotated genes

WP5 will provide a unique database with knowledge on the function of over a thousand of genes and cryopreserve the corresponding mouse mutants as a resource of novel model. WP5 will collect primary data and made them available to the scientific community through a database that will be constituted under the umbrella of the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC), and by this way provide new translational mouse models for biomedical research.
